Workshops

Day workshops & more...

As well as regular adult education classes, workshops and major school projects, Caroline also provides tuition for schools, colleges and other special interest groups on an ad hoc basis.

These can last for anything from half a day to a full week and can cater for group sizes from one or two individuals up to eight or ten people.

Why not give the gift of a stained glass workshop to a friend or loved one? Learning a new skill has never been so much fun!

Workshop options

Caroline is able to offer a range of options, from a fully managed day workshop to an informal talk to a local craft group. She can arrange everything, including the venue and individual bookings, or you can take charge of the administration yourself and just let Caroline do the teaching,

Special needs?

Caroline is experienced in teaching adults and children with special needs and she enjoys a close working relationship with the National Star College, where she is a regular visiting teacher.

Everything is provided!

Caroline provides a comprehensive selection of tools for each student individually, and these are regularly updated and well maintained.  She also provides the larger ancillary items such as soldering irons and grinders. There is no tool sharing - every student is provided with a full set of tools.

Everything you need...

Caroline always carries a wide range of glass to choose from and can supply everything you need to make a leaded panel, a Tiffany lampshade or a fused glass bowl.

She has several glass fusing kilns at home and will send back fused glass items after firing or slumping by post or courier if required.

She also has a good range of ‘findings’ and other items you may need to make a wide variety of jewellery items in coloured glass.

Do it Yourself?

Many of Caroline’s recent workshops have been organised by members of local WI and other groups in their own local venues, with Caroline supplying all the tools, equipment and materials needed and providing what is essentially a ‘plug and play’ solution

Special events

Caroline is happy to offer this arrangement as a more worthwhile alternative to the traditional team building or ‘hen party’ alternatives.

She has used this model successfully in a number of recent special events such as Valentine’s Day, Christmas Decorations, Garden Ornaments, Mothers’ Day, Children’s Parties, Wedding Favours and Keep Sakes, and Jewellery making.

Distance no object...!

Caroline is also happy to discuss speciality workshops for all levels of skill and experience so, if you fancy setting up an ‘Extreme Fusing’ workshop, for instance, why not give her a call..?

By the way, don’t feel inhibited because you’re not local to South Gloucestershire, because Caroline holds regular day workshops in Somerset, Wiltshire, Gloucestershire, Herefordshire and Buckinghamshire and is happy to travel to your venue to run a workshop

Stuff you need to know…

What will I make?

Pretty much anything you fancy!  During the day you will make unique and beautiful items at your own pace. You will be shown various samples and designs to inspire you and you will apply varied techniques to complete your project.

If you are a complete beginner we will guide you through the basics of glass cutting and the remarkable process of fusing, copper foiling or leading (depending on which course you have chosen).  During a copperfoiling workshop you can expect to make up to 3 items.  In a leaded light workshop you can expect to make a small panel with up to 8 pieces of glass. In a fused glass workshop you can expect to make 3 smaller pieces or 1 larger piece.  As everyone works at a different pace this is just a guide line.

If you have done it before you can continue to explore glass as a creative medium and hopefully pick up a few more tips and tricks along the way.

We carry a good stock of glass, lead, copper foil and compatible inclusions for fusing.  If you are trying your hand at fusing and wish to make a slumped piece such as a bowl there is a large selection of shapes and sizes for you to choose from.

For old and new alike the most difficult bit of the whole day is usually deciding what to make!  You are welcome to use one of our designs or we can help you interpret your own ideas if you prefer.

What do I need to bring?

Please ensure you wear sturdy shoes (no open toes) and if you have long hair please wear it tied back.

You are welcome to bring your own glass if you have it (fusing glass needs to have a COE of 96).

Do bring along your own design ideas and images for inspiration that I can help you to interpret in a simple way.  As I said before there will be plenty of books and ideas for you to use.

What will the material and firing costs be?

The costs of materials will vary on what is made but on average (including firing) most people spend approximately £25 on fused glass, £18 for leading and £12 for copper foiling.  Glass and materials may be bought at cost and for the fusing I charge for firing and slumping on a pro rata basis depending on the size and nature of the project.

Refreshments (only applies to workshops held at my studio)

We will provide a light lunch and plenty of drinks and snacks throughout the day.

What are the course times?

Your day begins at 10am. When you arrive we will share coffee and get to know one another.  Lunch will be at 1pm.  The course runs until 4pm by which time you need to have finished and tidied your work station.

When can I pick my fusing up?

All fusing can be collected 10 days after your course date or it can be posted out to you at a cost of £10 although the cost of postage may be more for particularly large items.  All glass posted is at the student’s own risk and we are not liable for breakages, although we do pack all glass work very well.  Students are of course more than welcome to arrange their own delivery/collection.

What about parking and access?

For workshops held at my studio there is plenty of free parking in our drive or in the nearby church car park but unfortunately no disabled access.

What happens if I need to cancel my booking?

For cancellations received 14 days or more in advance of your course date we may be able to offer you a refund if your place is resold.  We are unable to offer a refund for cancellations within 14 days.
